After more than 30 years of massive global expansion America has reached what
appears to be a fork in the road. If we step back from the “growth at all cost” race
for just a moment, and look in the rearview mirror on lessons gained there are some
important dynamics that beg consideration as we continue forward. The rapid pace
in which the world is becoming one international economy can have some chilling
effects in a down cycle or significant event anywhere in the chain of nations. The
point is made clear as we look at the current economic crisis in the once infallible
American economy that has subsequently sent shock waves around the world.
Equally notable is the crisis caused by political unrest in Greece on the stability of
the European economy demonstrating the power of just one weak link in the global
chain.

Women and the Interim Management Field
The Monthly Labor Review published an article penned by Marisa DiNatale and Stephanie Borass
seven years ago revealing the marked workplace differences of ‘Gen X’ women ages 25-34 to their
counterparts 25 years earlier, and to males in the current workforce. Many of these changes
continue to accelerate, positively altering the diversity of the labor force. Although these changes
have been many years in the making, the current recession has become the catalyst for further
advancement of these dynamics. All of which seems to suggest an important trend in the career
paths of women in the coming years.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics conducted a study of ‘Generation X’ women in the business world over the past 25 years and outlined a number of important indicators of change.
Increased Workforce: A little more than half of American women age 25-34 participated in the workforce in 1975; twenty five years later about three-quarters of women were in the workplace. At the time of the study, unemployment rates for women were little different from that of men, and the gap has remained narrow since.
